Nice shots, JB.... the limitations of B&W film to accurately render separation between Espee's scarlet red and gray was always a challenge.
Back in those days, I would leave a yellow-green filter on my lens to help render these colors more accurately. NWI chapter NRHS' "Guide to Railroad Photography" specifically outlined this and showed examples of different filters and their effect w/ SP covered wagons on the SFZ at Sacramento, I think.
Some photographers would use a red filter which made the SP scarlet stand out way too much,.. Yellow filters worked fairly well, but I found that the yellow green was just about right.

Of course, it was limited to how dirty the nose is
