Nostalgia & History > What depot is this?Date: 11/26/14 11:37 What depot is this? Author: santafe199 I was in the middle of some routine filing and I had the TV tuned into the AMC channel. The classic “Gone With the Wind” was playing. (Sure, I’ve seen it quite a few times. But it sure beats the rest of the 90% garbage now permeating modern television…) A commercial for Fiat automobiles came on and I just happened to look up and catch the scene below. The commercial had a clever theme, pointing out a few locations in the USA with Italian names. When I saw this depot in the background I froze the image so I could grab a shot off the screen.
To my surprise, a foray into Google Maps actually produced a Palermo, ND. But with a current population of less than 100 and no visible depot in the satellite view I’m not surprised this is a fictional scene. But it sure peaked my interest. I’m sure someone on board TO can ID this town & RR; current, former or otherwise… 1. Unknown (to me) RR depot in an equally unknown location. Taken from an AMC Channel Fiat commercial on November 26, 2014. TIA for any information! Lance Garrels santafe199 Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 07/27/22 01:52 by santafe199. But I could be wrong and if I am I will be told in short order! Date: 11/26/14 11:46 Re: What depot is this? Author: hogheaded Whatever happened to Truth in Advertising? At the time that the Bakersfield depot was built, it could have sheltered the entire populace (including farm animals) of North Dakota.
-E.O. Date: 11/26/14 11:46 Re: What depot is this? Author: santafe199 That was fast! Thanks, guys. I suppose the Fiat people can be forgiven for moving California over & up to the Canadian border... ;^)

(sides splitting with cynical laughter!!!) THAT went into the crapper eons ago. RE: the DOZENS of "call this number [repeated a zillion times] commercials: "BUT WAIT: call in the next XX minutes & we'll double your order FREE!" (just PAY EXTRA handling) But it's FREE! (just PAY EXTRA handling) But it's FREE! (just PAY EXTRA handling) But it's FREE! (just PAY EXTRA handling) But it's FREE! (just PAY EXTRA handling) But it's... And people actually spend their money on this (usual) junk... (that's right, folks: you GET IT ALL... ;^) Date: 11/26/14 13:04 Re: What depot is this? Author: raytc1944 Palermo, ND was and is on the former Great Northern main west of Minot at MP540. Now, of course, it is BNSF.

------------------------------------------------------- > Yeah, It almost looks like a palm tree behind > building above the Fiat. LOL! Palm trees actually are not unheard of in North Dakota. With the state's new multitude of trailer parks resultant of the late oil boom, there has been a proliferation of that little-known species of native North Dakota palm, Palmaceae Plastica. -E.O. Date: 12/05/14 09:26 Re: What depot is this? Author: kingman I thought it looked like the Bakersfield too so I googled Palermo Calif. Interesting, Norther calif. about 70 miles North of Sacramento . It is named after Palermo Sicily, and was good for olive growing and wheat , had a railroad, California northern eventually bought by SP after defaults and tax issues. Cant find any old depot pics although it says there were 2 stations at one time. Has a railroad avenue and today west of the center of town there are northbound tracks and on google earth it shows a consist ands up engines. Population around 5500 but no depot. Somebody did a little creative editing . They wonder why very few people believe anything on TV any more. Heres a tidbit, I googled Palermo ND and there seems to be a Bakersfield Pipe Supply about 8 miles west of it. Hmmmmmm thats minutia .

Date: 12/06/14 18:56 Re: What depot is this? Author: lwilton Decades ago when Sperry and Burroughs (computer companies) were merging to form Unisys, I did a series of spoof post-merger magazine ads and stuck them in some of the bulletin boards around the plant. They lasted until some Detroit VPs shewed up one day and went apoplectic.
Sperry made various missile guidance systems. I had a poster that said "When target accuracy really counts!" at the top. Below that was a cross-hairs view above the nose of a missile. The cross-hairs were centered on a cow, looking curiously at the incoming missile, standing next to a sign that said Moscow, Id. Date: 12/06/14 20:48 Re: What depot is this? Not Palmaceae Plastica Sempervirens? Maybe that's the inland variety (as opposed to the Coast variety). |
