ID'ing PRR Schuykill Div. locations c. 1955 (pt II)
Author: chico

Ok, so we saw the slides from the thread of a day ago (part I) of the 1955 excursion on the PRR Schuykill Div up to Wilkes-Barre from Philadelphia, photos shot by John Dziobko, Jr. from his 1955 slidebox. I have the next roll to show you. I believe these start at Wilkes-Barre as the train is readied for the trip back to Philadelphia with the A-B-A power. We will see some LV activity in the area on this roll, as well as some nice vintage signals (probably on the LV) that date back to the WWI era I'd bet.

These shots are uploaded sequentially as the slides are numbered.

I will give each shot their slide # for reference if you can help ID locations, and refer back to the other thread to see where we left off. Thanks!

#1 ROW shot. near Wilkes-Barre

#2 track, the other main out of service

#3 How about this signal? I say ex LV, c. 1910-20 it's an antique!

while at the depot, LV action..

#14 LV SW makes a move

#15 LV 601 pulls in with a train

#16 LV 601 again at the depot

note the 1950s practice of NOT having headlight on during the day, a holdover from the steam era.

Fantastic pictures, especially for the modeler. Thanks for sharing again. A couple of questions. In photo 6 what's that between the rails at the end of the switch points? And didn't those RS2's in photo 21 end up on the Pennsy? Thanks again, Ken

#4 Looks like the crossing of the DL&W Hanover and Newport Branch at Nanticoke.
#8 Is South Wilkes-Barre. Building in background is the Vulcan Iron Works.

I've reviewed old topo maps, old aerial photos, and PRR stuff in my collection and came up with the following locations. They are as accurate as possible given the circumstances. And thanks to 'Tamaqua78" for the help.

#1 & 2) ROW shots between Nescopeck and Nanticoke, PA

#3) Nanticoke, PA- PRR Glen Lyon Br. on left (I think!)

#4) Nanticoke, PA DL&W xing (as posted by Tamaqua78)

#5) Nanticoke, PA ?

#6) Honeypot Yard (south of Nanticoke) Looks like cab signal test loop in adjacent track.

#7) Tomhicken, PA--Train leaving LVRR onto PRR enroute to Nescopeck

#8& 8b) S. Wilkes-Barre-- Vulcan Iron Works (thanks to Tamaqua78)

#9 through #20) Wilkes-Barre

#21 Buttonwood Yard--D&H train is on Wilkes-Barre Connecting RR which ran between Hudson Yd. (D&H) and Buttonwood and allowed direct interchange w/o going through downtown.

All these photos appears to be taken on the NB run except #21 which is SB.

Hope these locations help everyone orient themselves.
