mighty big train that day, with TWO baggage cars and several extra coaches and sleepers. Also looks like their is an ex-El Cap transition dorm-coach on both ends of the Superliner consist.

SP 7399 leading Amtrak, never knew that happened! Any color shots?

Yes, my buddy and I chased it all the way from Martinez to Newcastle. Actually, this was not the only time I caught the 7399 on the point of the SFZ. SP would usually place a unit on the point if they had a biz car on the rear (though not always) - I guess it was their way to fly the corporate flag. Remember, in 1981 SP still supplied train crews.

1982, it was on the Reno Fun Train

As WAF said, here it is on the Fun Train in Feb 1982 Westbound, at Boca Dam, Truckee and Switch 9. Weather got darker and wetter as I went West.
