A Freight Car "Whatizit"

I saw this special service gondola on a southbound Soo Line train passing through Van Dyne, Wisconsin in April of 1977. What is it hauling?

That was an OTDX gondola, intended for the transportation of carbon black. What you're seeing is the empty containers for this commodity, made out of rubber.

These were supplanted by covered hoppers equipped with Gran-u-flators to speed up the unloading process, and by a group of unusual flat cars that hauled metal containers on two levels.

Union Carbide in Torrance, CA, on the Santa Fe used to get these kind of cars with rubber bags alot in the sixties.

As far as I know, OTD Corporation was the only owner of cars like this. Their series was OTDX 2001-2048. I have notes about some of them being leased to Cabot Corporation, but nothing in my notes for Sid Richardson.
