Old (1949-50) Photos from Assoc. of American RR (Part 4
Author: wyemarsh

Photo #1 (AAR print #55 labeled 'In a Railroad Office') ....and description from the info book:
"This picture shows one of the newer methods of sorting waybills---orderly rows of 'filing wheels' which can be moved easily to the position best suited to the workers' needs. Operators in the picture are sorting waybills chronologically and numerically and, with a mere twirl of a finger, any one of several thousand waybills may be brought into view."

My note---Wow! Where where are the computers when you need them? These must be used roulette wheels from a defunct casino that the workers are using to sort the waybills!

I recall, as a young boy in the 1950s, the conductor on the U.P. branch line freight train carrying a big folding leather waybill pouch attached to his belt with a chain. When he arrived in our little town, he would pull the pouch out and sort out the waybills for the cars to be left at the grain elevator, farm equipment unloading ramp, or gas storage tanks, and then pick up similar waybills from the freight storage area of the depot.

Photo #2 (print #57 labeled 'Railway Trade-Marks') Note: I have this composite of trade-marks or logos in a separate PDF file.....also with the printed names of the railroads that appeared on the reverse side of the original print. If you want a copy of the trade-marks, send me a TrainOrders private message with your e-mail address, and I will send the PDFs to you as attachments.

Here's something to ponder about that last shot. Only one of those
"trademarks" is still in existence.

These have been interesting. Thanks for posting.

I counted about 5 that are still in existence.

A quick glance - TRRA, Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, Union Pacific are still in existance and I believe use the trademark. CP's and UP's are slightly different.

Lots of railroads that are no more.

Wasn't there a similar sheet produced later with updated emblems? I seem to remember one with the newer Milwaukee Road and UP emblems.

The series has been interesting. Thanks for posting.

Also Belt Railway of Chicago, Canadian National,(different logo), Wheeling & Lake Erie (different company from the original but still much of the same railroad), and I believe Winston-Salem Southbound is still a jointly owned subsidiary of NS & CSX.

My original post was in reference to the actual logo's, or heralds
as we used to call them. I clearly missed the KCS and Belt Railway
of Chicago. And yes, the WLE herald is the same, however, it's a
totally different company and I'm not going to count it. CN and CP
have both changed their heralds so while the companies still exist,
highly altered, the heralds don't.

Hey, this was fund!
