Nostalgia & History > Beets on ice ....Date: 12/18/14 07:02 Beets on ice .... Author: valmont Great Western SW9's 122 & 121 lead a string of sugar beet cars near Loveland, Co in January 1976. The beet harvests here back then brought in other RR's power on he C&S, such as MKT and D&RGW F's and UP Geeps street running in Longmont. Of course the Great Western was a regular photo subject, with direct access to Great Western Sugar mills in Loveland, Longmont and Johnstown, Colorado. In addition all three of those mills operated small fireless dinky's to work the mills, into the 70's.
If you want a look at the variety of dinky's used by GWS from it's many beet mills, check out my post from 2/07/12, subject line "the Dinky's of Great Western Sugar" Date: 12/18/14 07:03 Re: Beets on ice .... Author: 3rdswitch Nice catch.
JB Date: 12/18/14 08:50 Re: Beets on ice .... Author: kwo Beautiful photo, classic GW. That scene has changed just a wee bit, especially the distant background. Thankfully with that road in the foreground it is still a nice, open shot of the GW.
