Nostalgia & History > When I was a Barbarian #8Date: 12/18/14 11:05 When I was a Barbarian #8 Author: BoilingMan Photo 1. Aboard 14 at Jalama. Note the 4the car in the consist- a Southern Railway coach newly acquired in Amtrak's take over of the Crescent. I was keen to ride during these last months (weeks?) before Superliners changed things forever.
Photo 2. Arrival in SLO. Photo 3. As expected, 11 had already cleared SLO, so I rode the first EB freight back to SB. This is on Vandenberg AFB- USAF 2104. Photo 4. Passing Surf. This is not the original Surf depot, but I don't know if it's a new building or one of the original buildings "repurposed". Info help from one of the old heads? Photo 5. Santa Barbara, but I'm not sure of the train- probably a very late 11. Photo 6. Ribbon rail finally coming to the Coast. There's no date on this one, but I suspect I've jumped to the early/mid 80's. When did these signs go up for the block dispatching? SR Bush Dutch Flat Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/18/14 11:08 by BoilingMan. Date: 12/18/14 15:57 Re: When I was a Barbarian #8 Author: BoilingMan Well, Surf had a typical SP style station (a variation of a #22), and I have a photo of it from 1971 (I'll be posting soon) and, yes, it was torn down shortly after. But in this 1979 photo this was what was being used. There were a few other "lesser" buildings in Surf besides the main depot, and I'm wondering if this was one of them, or did SP build this in the mid 70's. Today, it too is gone.

The wooden one was in sad shape by 1971 and exposed to the ocean, probably would fall down from dry rot and termites

I had a look at the SWRM website- it seems 2104 was a fairly recent arrival at Vandenberg. It had been on the Base not quite 6mo when I got caught the shot of it in June '79.
