Nostalgia & History > A Couple N&W U-boatsDate: 12/18/14 13:53 A Couple N&W U-boats Author: MartyBernard 1. and 2. N&W U30B 8511 and GP18 taking a break in Chicago on April 2, 1971. In Photo 2 some of a unit that looks to be numbered 8146 is showing. I can't find 8146 or 8140 on a N&W roster. Any idea what she is? [Edit: See comment below. She's a U25B.]
3. N&W U30B 8523 in St. Louis on July 31, 1977. Comments and correction always welcome. Enjoy, Marty Bernard Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 12/18/14 19:38 by MartyBernard. Date: 12/18/14 14:09 Re: A Couple N&W U-boats Author: NKP-875 Thanks for showing the GE's.
They bring back good (I'm sure that will get some comments) memories. I was promoted to engineer in March, 1973 on the N&W Lake "C" District ( It might have been Ohio or Pittsburgh Division at the time). My first run, as an engineer, out of my home terminal at Conneaut, Ohio, was an AP1, a westbound van train. The lead unit was NW 8465. I always felt a special affection for that unit, in particular, and and all the GE 4 axles in general till they were stricken from the property and the roster. Glad to see they still get some attention. DAM Date: 12/18/14 16:38 Re: A Couple N&W U-boats Author: rev66vette 8146 was a U-25-B....photo of it taken in 1971 on RR picture archives.net.

Lots of memories of that track, as it is where NS steam excursions sponsored by the St Louis Chapter NRHS boarded. That long track and long access road, and the low ballast shoulder in the yard made it a good boarding site. I walked a good part of that road back and forth many times as a trip crew chief, preparing the train and boarding passengers.
Hopefully it will not be long before 611 returns there once again. MC Columbia, Missouri Date: 12/19/14 17:55 Re: A Couple N&W U-boats Author: WP-M2051 Cool paint scheme.

I did like the sound of the GE's though. The N&W engineers that I knew, didn't like them either. John Marty, who was a dispatcher, once commented: Those G** D***** GEs! Apparently, he had delays from the locos failing out on the road.
