Nostalgia & History > Southern Railway Steam Fan Trips, 1971, Part 1Date: 12/18/14 20:00 Southern Railway Steam Fan Trips, 1971, Part 1 Author: MartyBernard In September 1971 I photographed three fan trips double headed by SOU 722 and S&A 750. They were run in Virginia on September 11, 12, and 25.
With my son, I rode the September 11 trip and present some pictures below. The trip started in Richmond. The five pictures are of runbys. Locations have been lost in time. The trips on the 11th and 12th were sponsored by the Old Dominion Chapter of the NRHS. Enjoy, Marty Bernard Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 12/20/14 14:07 by MartyBernard. As far as I know, 722 is still disassembled at GSMR in Bryson City, NC. See http://www.gsmr.com/about/news/letter-mr-allen-c-harper/fellow-steam-patrons-and-railroad-fans#.VJSMDAhzw.

Southern Railway excursions as the "golden age" of "modern" steam steam trips! Date: 12/19/14 15:46 Re: Southern Railway Steam Fan Trips, 1971, Part 1 Author: nycman Both of those locomotives looked great. Is that "Southern" valve gear on 722?
