Nostalgia & History > In the bowels of KCUSDate: 12/19/14 09:30 In the bowels of KCUS Author: santafe199 Several days ago I had to make the jump to a new scanner. My old & tired HP was showing signs of leaving me. (…maybe to go look for Elvis?) I ended up buying a new Epson V550 and I jumped right in with some trial scans. I just grabbed the nearest Logan box, which happened to be in an sort of alphabetical file. So it was “A” as in Amtrak that got the first honors. I had some pretty good success right away, so I’m more or less continuing to “surf” scan through all 3 of my Amtrak Logan boxes.
I've been finding some stuff I barely remember shooting. Slides that haven’t seen the light of day for over 25 years. And it has surely been fun re-discovering these slides. But I think it’s good for me to get all the early scanning “bugs” worked out before I dive back into mass scanning through the wonderful Gibson collection. So I’m blitzkrieging my way through all my Amtrak stuff, all of which was taken in the 1980s or earlier… I worked the flagging job on trains #4 & #3 for a couple of round trips in October of 1979. It was an inter-divisional run, so the Middle Division crews would work their side of the job out of Newton, KS laying over in Kansas City while the Eastern Division boys worked the opposite, laying over in Newton. During one of my KC layovers I got on a city bus and headed for Union Station to see what I could find. No trains would be running, but one never knew what else might be hanging around back in those days. Here is one of my shots: 1. KCT Kansas City Union Station scene. We’re looking west around supper time. There are some stored (?) Amtrak coaches & what-not over on the north side of the “live” tracks. The date is October 21, 1979. For this shot I was blessed with a smidgen of sunset color to give me a little bit of an artsy shooting opportunity. I remember it was very quiet down in those virtual bowels of KCUS. Even 35 years later [with just a bit of railfan wanderlust] I can imagine that day I was listening to the ghosts of tens of thousands of trains from a dozen railroads who came calling at this historic crossroads over the decades... Date: 12/19/14 10:46 Re: In the bowels of KCUS Author: railaddict I was a 'moody" time in Kansas City in October of 1979. Recently gone for good were the National Limited to New York, and the Lone Star from Chicago to Texas. No wonder there were extra High Level Chair Cars sitting around.
