Chessie ALCO S-4's Revisited
Author: EH49

A few weeks ago I posted some photo's of the Chessie painted S-4 switchers we had here in the Pittsburgh area. I posted the 9007 in 2 Chessie schemes and the 9010. Here are 3 more shots of them.

Photo 1: Here is 9010 again. Hey, they forgot something! Yep, they forgot to paint the top vermillion stripe and most of the handrails. It was pulled back into the shop about a week after it's first release to correct the issues. Pictured here at Glenwood, Pa.

Photo 2: Here is the. 9009 sitting at Millvale, Pa.. the only one of the 3 I did not post last time.

Photo 3: How about a pair of them. Taken at Glenwood.

Between this post and the last, that pretty much takes care of the paint variations amongst the 3.

What are the dates of the photos?

Its very interesting how the unit wasn't quite done being painted in the first photo.

Thank you for sharing these.

Bad photo, but here is my grab shot of a Bath & Hammondsport S4 on their original line in 1988.

To make things easier, I'll repost 9007's first Chessie paint scheme here which it wore for a about a month when it was repainted to match its sister's.

Amazing how these scenes change. The approximate spot of the first photo is now a Transflo terminal. The yard trackage at Millvale was all pulled over 12 years ago.

Unfortunately, by the time I moved to Pittsburgh, Chessie merged into CSX and the Alcos were gone. I do appreciate your photos. The locomotive in the first image is so clean. All other photos I've seen of Chessie Alcos showed less clean diesels.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Marty. Do you have dates for these?
