Nostalgia & History > SOU Mikado 4501 Visited Chicago on June 24, 1973Date: 12/21/14 12:59 SOU Mikado 4501 Visited Chicago on June 24, 1973 Author: MartyBernard The photos were taken from the Roosevelt Road Viaduct and the trains were on the leads to LaSalle Street Station. Rock Island E6A 630 was brought out to pose with the Mikado. A commuter train came by also. The last photo shows all the steam fans lined up along the viaduct.

I remember chasing 4501 outbound on the Rock Island. Difficult to photograph a westbound steam excursion in the morning, and the retiring eastbound in the afternoon. The damned sun is always in your face!

I especially love the '69 Charger in the last photo. Date: 12/22/14 14:47 Re: SOU 4501 Visited Chicago on June 24, 1973 Author: NebraskaZephyr This was the first (and last) steam fantrip on the RI after they dieselized in 1953.
In one of my parents' photo albums (in storage) there are Polaroid photos of the train passing through Utica and my Dad and I standing next to the 4501 at Bureau. Thanks for sharing this, Marty! NZ |
