3 Unusual Santa Fe
Author: callum_out

Three somewhat unusual Santa Fe shots from late 1979.
1) The York Canyon coal coming down the hill with four GP-40X units for power
2) The same train mid train helpers with three more GP-40X units.
3) An uphill (eastbound) train at Devore (bottom of Cajon Pass) with power problems.
Dispatcher has cured the problem by having the overpowered trailer train shove
the distressed train up the hill. More distressing might be the ride in the cab!

Nice bunch as always but I think this would have been the York Canyon Kaiser train as the Wasco train should not have even come close to Cajon Pass? This looks to be westbound at Devore? Must have been a serious locomotive problem as the three GP's ahead of the big power were most likely already helpers as was the norm during this time. But, at least there were three. I remember many times stopping at ONO or just east of Verdemont to wait for a two GP helper thinking it would have been quicker to just keep going without them instead of having to stop, wait, get going again then stop east of Summit, cut off the helpers then get going again, MOST of the time a pair of GP's didn't make or break you, go figure.

And nobody in their right mind would be in that waycar either.

Great catch on that Sierra Railroad boxcar in the last shot. Thanks for posting.

Not really a problem so long as you notch off on the helper a little going around the sharp corners.
