A few years ago (could be as much as 10) we rode the Skunk DMU during the off season and conductor/engineer stopped at one point and mentioned that all of the forest we were passing through was third growth. He pointed out a stand of trees across the river that were second growth privately owned by a conservationist. He said "now imagine what this looked like when it was all first growth."
I have ridden on the CW several times over the years, but this was the most informative trip. It was a small crowd during the off season, the conductor had his wife along and mentioned he was retiring soon and was telling stories of his 30+ years of service and with a better commentary of the route than I have had before or since. |
