Nostalgia & History > Maroon Monday - Quad City AreaDate: 01/26/15 06:20 Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: trainboy03 Here's a trio of Rock Island trains playing the snow in the Quad City area from the lens of John Dziobko. I have been scanning his collection and we just featured these (among many others) in his annual presentation at the NWI Chapter - NRHS in Rockford on Saturday. John did not keep notes, so all we've got to go on for dates are the dates stamped on the Kodachrome mounts. All three of these were processed in March of 1977.
1. RI 215 West at 55th Street Moline, IL. 2. RI 278 West at Durant, IA. 3. RI 295 East at the crossing between Stockton and Walcott, IA. Erik Date: 01/26/15 07:39 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: 3rdswitch Awesome bunch.
JB Date: 01/26/15 08:25 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: santafe199 Nice stuff! Typical Rock Island consists, especially toward the end. Part of why the Rock is still such a beloved & sentimental favorite for so many fans!
Lance Date: 01/26/15 08:41 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: ntharalson That's the thing about John: he often doesn't know what he's got! (Of course,
that statement applies to many of us, especially me. Someday I'll illustrate that.) The first time he showed in Cedar Rapids, courtesy of TO member Andy Brown, he started off with a shot of a westbound Rock Island freight in Davenport with a DE SD40 on the point, followed by a UP(!!) C628. I'm not kidding. He had no clue. Thanks for posting, Erik. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 01/26/15 10:46 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: rantoul What does 'DE' stand for?
Date: 01/26/15 10:51 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: trainboy03 Detroit Edison. Here is the shot Nick is referring to, processed in October 1973, shortly after John moved to Davenport, IA.
Erik Date: 01/26/15 11:30 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: CNW8531 Oh, what I wouldn't give to go back to the Rock Island days! Nice shots!!
Date: 01/26/15 12:15 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: zr190 First shot "could be" the Missouri Local going by the
cement hoppers and the tank cars on the head end. Cement cars to Linwood and the tank cars to Hookers (Oxy Chem) west of Buffalo. If it is, the switch eng is no doubt headed for Muscatine. zr190 Date: 01/26/15 13:38 Re: Maroon Monday - Quad City Area Author: zfan Great pics! Love the RI!

Shot #2 is probably the Iowa City Turn. Shot #3 is either Train 44 off the UP at Omaha, or could be 56. The photo with the DE Leader looks to be Train 01, the SP run thru that ran over the Golden State. MILW86A |
