UP biz car name search
Author: Copy19

I rode the 1991 UP steam double header from Salt Lake City to Sacramento. But for the life of me I can't remember the name of the business car we used on that trip. I searched TO for the consist but the only thing I came up with is a post I made two years ago about a switching incident with the train in Salt Lake. Any help or photo would be much appreciated by this old-timer.

Although I wasn't able to shoot the train enroute to Sacramento, I did manage to chase it back to Cheyenne from Salt Lake. Pictures of the train eastbound through Echo Canyon show biz cars Arden, Cheyenne, and Feather River, so perhaps it's one of these three? My slides indicate the consist was 904304, 209, 206, Arden, Cabarton, North Platte, Western Lodge, Sunshine Special, Texas Eagle, Sun Valley, Portland Rose, City of Los Angeles, Columbine, Challenger, Western Star, Cheyenne, 208, Portola, Overland, Harriman, and Feather River.

Ok, it's starting to make sense. My wife reminds me that our business car, AKA "The PR car" was up ahead of the coaches, sleepers, domes and two more business cars for the big kids from corporate. The car just ahead of us was the staff car Carbarton. Your consist suggests my wife and I were in the Arden, but that car would have been way above my pay scale. It would be interesting to learn how the trains was turned or reassembled in Sacramento for the eastbound trip. We didn't ride the eastbound but flew back to Omaha.

Anyone take pictures of the westbound?

Arden

John,
I believe by 1991 the Arden was becoming downgraded after the Evans family left the board. That was their car. I believe the Lewis's were using a different car for their trips. Now the Arden is in very sad condition outside the roundhouse in Cheyenne.

Ok, it appears the Arden was our car. Ed trandahl from our PR office shared the car with Pat and me. If memory serves me somewhere along the line the Lewises adopted the ancient Shoshone car for their use.

Shoshone was his wife's car. Lewis had another car, IIRC, the Arden for himself

John was the FEATHER RIVER the WP Business car renamed by then to the ARDEN , I think I still have some of the Keys for the Feather River. you could still tell which car was the Feather River by the square metal box on the rear of the car that was used to store the Flannery family ski's on trips to and from Salt Lake

No, the Feather River was the former UP biz car 114. The WP business car was originally Union Pacific 101, built in 1912. It was eventually sold to the WP. After the 1982 WP-UP-MP merger the car went to the MP, then later was renamed the Selma. The Arden is stored in Cheyenne.

Wow, I've been on the Selma and certainly wouldn't have guessed a 1912 build date. It had a very 1970s interior.
