Something You Won't See Again
Author: RDG630

Back in 1984 Conrail had abandoned use of the so called "Hill Track" which was the original Reading Company East Penn Branch over Temple Hill just east of Reading, Pa. The Reading Company constructed the Blandon Low Grade line in 1955 to avoid the steeper grade over the hill. In 1984. about a month after Conrail cut off the line (but had not yet removed the track) the Blandon Low grade line sank into a quarry causing CR to reopen the Hill Track. So, here are some scenes from that brief time.

Note the Low Grade Line switch was cut off here at Blandon as an eastbound train is seen.

Water was the interlocking in Reading yard where this line veered off the Pottsville Branch headed up and ran curbside along 11th St before leaving town and climbing the Temple Hill grade ... btw nice shot ...

Any destination of the auto frames behind the engines?

the frames were fabricated by DANA Corp in Reading and since they're heading east probable destinations could be Ford in Metuchen, GM in Linden ... possibly Ford in Suffern if the plant was still open or GM in Tarrytown ...

I thought that Nostalgia was the old Indian word for "won't see this again."

Ford closed the plant in 1980, and while the switch was out of Hillburn yard in Suffern the plant was in Mahwah NJ.

The switch in that last picture seems to be VERY recently out of service. The top of the rail on the right is still well polished, and the torch-cut end is still grey rather than rusty. I'd bet it was cut earlier that morning. Where did it go and why was it removed?

cut and shifted ... no need for a switch ... once the sinkhole was fixed ... the low grade was cut back in and the Temple Hill Line was abandoned and tracks removed
