how many F units did UP have ... i don't recall seeing too many ... in fact very rarely have i seen UP F units ...

That third unit looks like an Omaha GP20 -- a turbocharged GP9.

UP sold its remaining F units (all F9ms) to Rock Island in May, 1972. See Don Strack's fine Utah Rails website for a roster.

Rob,
I remember working with and seeing those F's on the Rock Island. I believe they traded some of their Rock Island F's to EMD for trade ins in place for the UP F's.
