TS 746, a personal favorite of mine.

She was built as Spokane International 207 in December 1949 by Alco. Her builder number is 77840. UP acquired stock control of the SI in 1958 and leased all the SI's locomotives in 1962, repainting them in UP colors with Spokane International lettering, renumbering the 207 to 1218. Later the engine received UP lettering.

In December 1969, the 1218 was retired, along with sister engine SI 205 / UP 1216. Both were sold to Chrome Crankshaft in later December 1969.

On February 2, 1970, the Tidewater Southern completed purchase of the two engines, with the 1218 becoming TS 746. Neither was repainting right away, instead the yellow and grey was touched up and TS lettering applied in matching red. Both received the trademark TS cab roof spotlight and started working the TS line between Stockton and Turlock, with the occasional trip down the Manteca branch.

The 746 was repainted into WP standard dark green and orange in the late spring or summer of 1972. An interesting note is that the lettering and graphics on the 746 and 747 differed once painted green. The 747 had a broken orange frame stripe, while the 746 had no stripe. And the roadname on the 747 was in two lines and noticeably staggered, with TIDEWATER to the left of SOUTHERN. On the 746, one side of the hood had the words slightly staggered, while the other side they were centered, although still in two stacked lines.

TS 746 was sold to the Central California Traction in December 1976, retired along with second 745, an S2, ending the era of TS lettered motive power. The 747 had given up the ghost about a year earlier.

746, now CCT 80, worked for the CCT until about 1981, mostly around Sacramento. She was sold into private ownership and later ended up on the Eureka Southern. Today, I understand she is at the Roots of Motive Power Museum in Willits, CA.

The last time I saw her was at a old lumber just west of Willits.
