I think those are the first BAR caboose photos I've ever seen. Thanks for a look at some of the more unusual cabs I've ever seen.

The big ones look like rebuilt express cars or Army kitchen cars. ???

The Allied Cushion Trucks are a dead giveaway, besides the plated over window openings, that the cars in images 1 and 5 are ex-Troop Car variants. The car in image 4 looks I.C.-ish.

Yes, those trucks were prohibited in interchange service.

I had never noticed the roof hatches before (probably never saw a BAR caboose frome above...). Were those leftovers from the original troop cars?

I think that they are vents that were original equipment on the troop sleepers. That overhead shot was taken from the coaling tower turned yard tower shown in the second shot.
