D&RGW 45's on and off the Grande
Author: FT

There was just something about the raw power of D&RG 45's lugging a train in mountains.

First is an iconic spot that has seen many a fan, around Cajon summit, CA 9/69 by Bob Robl

Next on their own rails, near Soldier Summit,UT 10/72 by me.

Last, near Fields, OR in the beasts twilight 7/3/94. Three 45's, D&RGW 5340 with ex Santa Fe and BN 45's in MK numbers and logo's. That was a great catch I
was glad to be there for.

I really like #2, because it shows movement, even though it's a photo. You can even see the exhaust from the helpers, in the distance.

Nice shots. Number two should be on a calendar or the cover of a book or something. Excellent photo!!

Is that an M5 horn on #5336?

Yep! #2 is a great shot. I picked out the mid-train helpers also. Reminds me of working the helpers on the SP Ore Train over Beaumont Hill.

Awesome series as usual FT but regarding the second shot, if thats Soldier Summit shouldnt there be 2 tracks? Thinking this might be somewhere else? Thanks.

I used the general area of Soldier Summit. It is a couple of miles east of the siding. I haven't been back since the yellow tide took over, but I'm told this is double tracked now. I
suppose Colton would be a closer location.

WOW!
Love the 5336 with the M5.
I guess the M3 matured.
