PRR "Fort Pitt" - Canton, Ohio
Author: refarkas

PRR 4293 and 4255 head a westbound PRR "Fort Pitt" through Canton, Ohio west of WANDLE Tower. It is most likely nearing Thanksgiving or Christmas 1967 because of the unusually large train with four baggage cars and four passenger cars. Although the pole line and its wires cast shadows, thankfully the large shadow on the building wasn't on the locomotives.

Terrific shot - having lived in Canton until the mid-60s, this shot brings back some great memories of the Pennsy.

Looks like at least two non-PRR head end cars; is the first one NYC?

I did a round trip from and to Canton in 1960-61, over the Christmas holiday. I think the train was the Manhattan Limited in both directions.

Yes, the first baggage car is NYC.

interesting "dip" job paint scheme on the locos. Simple...cheap.

How cool it would be to compare this scene with a similar one from 1957 - and 1947! Back when Pennsy was much more focused on everything! And had the money (or thought they did) to do it.

The stripe-less tuscan "dip" with the two Scotch-lite keystones was the last PRR E-unit scheme prior to the merger , though three units got the solid tuscan a good couple of the years after the merger as well, though I think it was more because the shop was out of black by then due to the austerity incumbent with bankruptcy. Note also the pre-merger large (renumbered) road numbers and the "de-port-hole-ization" well underway by then as well.
Those NYC baggage showed up everywhere , in some some respects as common as 50' REA boxes, interestingly PC ran a lot of foreign road second-hand head end cars as both the B-60's and NYC 7000-8000 series cars wore out and were sidelined, notably from the ACL, Southern, AT&SF, SP, EL, in some cases buying them outright.
Very interesting photo, thanks for posting!

Old PA RR operating crews on the old Fort Pitt were based out of Pittsburgh and worked to and from Crestline, OH.
