Nostalgia & History > Lost on Planet Cajon 6Date: 03/04/15 16:15 Lost on Planet Cajon 6 Author: BoilingMan Three variations of the classic EMD nose: Amtrak SDP40F, ATSF F45, and UPRR DD40X.
Photos 1&2. First up is #3. This was in '79, so it's pre-superliner and Amtrak was still mimicking ATSF's El Cap/Super Chief consist. I didn't get any clear shot of the first class part of the train so I'm not sure of the set-up- did sleeping car passengers go forward to use the El Cap diner & lounge? I'm guessing the dome here is a former NP sleeper- is that right? (had there been a Pleasure Dome, I'm sure I'd have photographed it, so I'm guessing there wasn't) An odd thing here it the red signal lamp is lit on the 502 up front- probably the crew fooling around saying "Hi" (assuming they could do that- I know they weren't making an emergency stop). Photo 6. I know someone's going to ask: No, I can't make out the number, and the slogan reads, "Be Careful Don't (Rush?) Into Us". If someone is familiar with the various slogans maybe you could confirm/correct that- I'm not 100% sure Rush is the right word here. Sure glad I thought to include so many cabooses on these excursions- who knew they'd soon be gone? SR Bush Dutch Flat Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/04/15 22:03 by BoilingMan. Santa Fe's passenger engines had a reset for the red gyralite if the brakes went into emergency; I'm not sure about Amtrak 500s. On double track or sidings opposing trains were supposed to stop when meeting an engine with a lit red gyralite so who knows what was going on this day.
Date: 03/04/15 19:08 Re: Lost on Planet Cajon 6 Author: upkpfan The word "Rush" could be right but also the word "Back". It looks like Be Careful, Don't Back into Us to me. The following cabooses that I know of so far have the word Back in it. 25529, 25664 and it also looks like to me the last 2 numbers are 45.
The following numbers have the word Rush in the slogan, 25223,25255,25256,25336,25520, 25561, 25649. upkpfan Date: 03/04/15 19:43 Re: Lost on Planet Cajon 6 Author: BoilingMan Some said "Back" and some said "Rush"? Huh..
I'll go have another look. (Either way: not one of their more coherent slogans. Just say'n) SR Date: 03/04/15 20:34 Re: Lost on Planet Cajon 6 Author: SP4360 Nice stuff there SR. I really like the early non-complaint Amtrak shots

Date: 03/04/15 21:48 Re: Lost on Planet Cajon 6 Author: BoilingMan Best I can squeeze out of it. B&W helped a little (sort'a). I'm sticking to "Rush"- still looks like an "s" in there to me. And if the record shows #45 had "Rush", that certainly could pass for a 45.
SR Yeow- I just posted this and I see the # really fades out here! You'll have to trust me on the 45- it looked better in Lightroom. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/04/15 21:51 by BoilingMan.
