A few SJVR from the start up
Author: dlbowen

The SJVR (San Joaquin Valley Railroad) took over some of the former SP branch lines in the Fresno/Visalia area 01/1992.  These are a few photos taken around Exeter plus.  The former VE office and shop was the SJVR headquarters.

1. SP delivered former 3 AZER (Arizona Eastern Railroad) locos  1751, 1754 and 1755 before the start up.
2. getting AZER 1751 ready to start
3. Start-up the first SJVR exhaust in Exeter

4. SJVR GM Fred Krebs (on ground) talks to a Kyle official from Phillipsburg, KS who is operating the loco.
5. Krebs and SJVR engineman Bill Morris ride 1754 to the engine house
6. Not everybody was glad to see non-union SJVR

7. Kyle 104 and 101 were the 4th and 5th locomotives to arrive
8. 1754 pulling a train of contaminated dirt from  the SP connection at Goshen Jct. to a disposal site near Huron
9. CW 65 and AZER 1755 at Goshen Jct.  CW had a cracked block and was returned to the CW

I find it amusing how ignorant people are of the word "scab". A scab is someone who crosses a picket line to take the place of striking workers. A scab is NOT a shortline taking over operations from a larger carrier that no longer wanted the route or an employee who works for said shortline.

Great pictures!

I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of the Kyle 104 and 101 working the SD&AE at Campo, CA either earlier or later on in their careers

Earlier actually. 101 and 104 were on Kyle's SD&AE operation before SJVR.

Not to be dumb but why is there a Yreka Western Logo minus the wording on these locomotives?

I believe that was a KYLE logo?  I remember seeing photos of SDAE units around '82 with the same one.

Yep, the wild goose was Willis Kyle's standard logo for all of his rather far-flung operations. The only one that I know of that didn't use the goose was the singing-conductor railroad on Maui (RIP), which as I've oft mentioned, was a subsidiary of Yreka Western.

The "goose" was also known as a ruptured duck.

Great, very historical shots, I'd forgotten that the AE preceded the SJV, time flies.

I rode the parts of the railroad in their business car in 1994 and again in 1996 (IIRC). First time was a charter by the Central Coast Railway Club and the second was a charter by Altamont Press. Lotsa fun.
