No sand dome? Looks like narrow gauge.

The balloon stack is off center next to the bell.

Quick work CPR_4000.  I thought I would have until morning.   Webpage  http://www.taplines.net/fs/fs.html Picture 1, “Florida SouthernRy locomotive # 8, a rare Rhode Island built narrow gauge engine ordered with
out the sand dome. The sander was located in the small box under the running
board. This train is on the Charlotte Harbor Division at Arcadia, FL around
1888. Note the two ventilated box cars.”

But Flynn, the balloon stack is off center next to the bell.  There is some part of the flue, a diagonal pipe attached to the boiler and to the stack next to the bell.

MartyBernard is correct.  Picture 2 is the portion nextto the smoke stack enlarged.  Is thepiece of equipment attached to the smoke stack some kind of spark arrestor?

A balloon stack is a spark arrestor.  The off-center stack and piping would probably be an attempt at better exhaust flow and thus more input air for a hotter fire and more efficient heat transfer.  But that's a guess.  The steam dome looks large relative to the boiler diameter.  Looks like the steam dome would have been in an awkward spot.

I think that the "flue" is the "drain", I guess you would call it, for the cinders out of the spark arrester.
But then again, I'm no Martin E. Hansen.

Sorry, but I think the "off center" stack is an illusion.

Yes, the balloon stack is a spark arrestor, as likely this is a wood burner. I too think the stack is off center. Note the combine at the end of this mixed train. Mixed trains were very common in that era.
