Lone Star Nights (vol #5)
Author: santafe199

Here are a couple more rear end, night time portraits of my favorite Amtrak train: the Lone Star (R.I.P!). I shot #16 at Emporia many times during 1978 & 1979. With its schedule time of 11:35 PM I could shoot a passenger train without losing a lot of sleep. The other 3 trains (#15, and #3 & #4) all stopped in Emporia in the wee hours between 3:00 & 3:45 AM in those days.

1. Amtrak train #16, the “Lone Star” at the station stop in Emporia, KS on December 19, 1978

2.Same as above with Mr. Luna & Miss Venus watching…

Thanks for looking back!

Great shots.

The deliberately reduced capacity consists on 15-16 were one of the reasons why the train's 1979 discontinuance was an Amtrak "hatchet-job".

The best railroading is always at night. Daytimes are for sleeping.
