  Hence the rule requiring that the conductor and rear brakeman ride the helper engine and not the caboose. In fact, it wasn't all that long ago that the rules required the crew of a MU-ed diesel helper set to run from the end not against the train, for just this reason.

"Pushing Too Hard" was the audio track for one part of this year's Winterail SP Coast line; of course it was about helper sets between San Luis Obispo and Santa Margarita.

I'm gonna venture a guess as to what transpired here:

The UP helper crew nodded off coming up the hill and the engine was still working full throttle around the tight curve at the west end of old Summit. When the Santa Fe realized what was happening, somebody pulled the air.
