Amtrak to keep NM route
Author: valmont

Just got a text from our daughter in NM that Amtrak is not going to alter their route through NM .... any verification?

Just found this ...

I don't think this is the end to this saga yet.

Well there certainly hasn't been any money voted for the project from New Mexico, so if Amtrak is
doing this it's out of their own operating budget. As the man says, the saga isn't over.

I bet BNSF "loans" Amtrak some money just to keep them out of Amarillo, Clovis, and Belen, as well as off of additional Transcon trackage.

Expect a slow ride though.

Funny, most if the problems are on Colorado and Kansas tracks.

Isn't that just what we expected? Amtrak makes the announcement themselves and those who never wanted this train to remain on the route or even continue to operate chime in with : " it ain't over yet   it ain't over yet" .

BNSF has already pledged $ to fund some of the track upgrades in KS and CO. This is not conditioned on anything related to keeping the SWC on the existing route.

Your "loans Amtrak some money" comment is ludicrous (I think this is the fourth time I've fact-checked you on this). BNSF is a free agent on 2/1/16 after the SWC operating agreement expires. They are not under any obligation legally, morally, politically or otherwise to run Amtrak on either the Raton or Amarillo routes. For the cost of a text message, BNSF could tell Amtrak to take a hike and there's nothing anybody could do about it.

There's also no fiduciary arrangement which would allow BNSF to loan Amtrak money, everything's
possible but this one would be a lulu.

I think it happened on the Devil's Lake repairs when Amtrak couldn't come up with its share.
