Southern SD??
Author: WichitaJct

The 70s and into the 80s was an intreresting time on the UP. The UP ran all kinds of pool power in eastern Kansas. For a while in the late 70s the UP had trains designated the SMU and UMS. The SMU originated on the Southern, Misouri Pacific handled it St. Louis to KC, and the UP took it from there. The UMS was the reverse of that. This Southern SD was on the point of an eastbound UP train at Topeka, maybe the UMS?I would guess this was about 1979. The picture was taken at "Porubskys" curve. Not sure what this SD is. As I recall the Southern had some high nose SD24s, but don't think it's an SD24. Maybe an SD18? Can anyone help me out? Thanks. Happy train watching.

Yes, an SD24. You can easily see the turbo exhaust stack.

Per Southern's Condensed List And Description of Locomotives of January 1, 1975, they had a total of forty eight SD24s numbered 6300-6347. Also, as an additional matter of information, the short hood is the front as it was for all Southern EMD GPs and SDs with 567s.
ALLEN

Twenty one units 6305-6325 were assigned to the CNO&TP, and four units 6344-6347 were assigned to AGS.

SD24's had a turbo, SD18's did not.

At one time Southern had SD24's in the low 2500's (2505-2524 I believe) and also 6950-6953 in addition to those in the 6300 series.  All got renumbered to the 6300's to put them in one group.   2500's were Southern proper, 6300's were CNO&TP (as seen by the sublettering on the photo) and the 6900's were AGS (Alabama Great Southern).

UMS - SMU ran on the Southern between Sheffield, AL and Memphis, then the MoPac between Memphis and Kansas City via Newport and Cotter.

I'd have to look at old ETTs but I think Southern retired its last SD24 in 1977 or 1978 when enough SD40-2's had been delivered.
