'Silver Streak' on the M&StL G-E 26 in 1958
Author: valmont

This one is labeled "M&StL #GE-26 Tr #14, Minneapolis, Minn.date 7-25-58". It's a red bordered gray mount. The lettering is clearly Bruce Black's, although he didn't add his name or initials anywhere. There is some 'speed blur' on the front end this shot.

Wow!  The GE motor is pulling a trailer and two express cars?  Impressive!  Couldn't do that (legally) with the RDC-4s they had!

I wonder if one of those snazzy Budd coaches was bringing up the markers?

I don't think so.  Weren't those Budd coaches gone about the time they got the RDCs?  And the GE's have passenger compartments built into them, which was right at the end of service, after the coaches and RDCs were gone.

Great photo, Vince - I really like seeing "doodlebugs" towing a train. I just tried a little tweak to deminish (not eliminate) the speed blur. It involves several steps in Photoshop.

Thanks for sharing Bruce' image with us.

Correct. The six streamlined coaches were sold to the Rock Island in either '56 or early '57 after arrival of the RDC-4s, unique in having passenger accomodations for 16. Unable to reliably pull trailers (even aluminum-bodied ones built especially for the RDCs), the RDCs departed in about a year, traded to the C&O for 32 used coal hoppers. It was upon the departure of the RDCs that a couple of the GE motorcars were rebuilt with a modest passenger compartment and given the silver/red scheme.

Thanks for the timeline on the Budd coach/RDC question. Are the two windows on the far end of the car in this photo the "coach" section?

Yes. Note that end of the car has a full vestibule with stairwell for the passengers, as opposed to stirrup steps at the near end for the crew.

My understanding this version actually ran for a little while after they got approval to pull the plug on the passenger schedule as they still had some lcl express and connecting forwarding contracts to fulfill. Great photo,
(nice painting too)

Pardon my ignorance, but from where to Minneapolis did this train operate/  I'm thinking it was
the former Minnesota Western, but I'm not up enough on the "Tootin' Louie" to know.

Train 14 operated overnight from Watertown, SD, due in Minneapolis at 6:30am.
