PC 7078 - A Local To Love
Author: refarkas

Sometimes an image captures a past scene in a special way. The image may not be perfect, but it conveys a part of mid-century railroading that is somewhat forgotten today. In this case it is the lowly "local freight". Here we have two PC first generation geeps, two freight cars, and what appears to be a freshly-painted ex-ATSF caboose (Thanks to those who corrected me about this.) and not an ex-NYC caboose as I first thought. It's summer 1972 in Alliance, Ohio and a great time to be a railfan.

That caboose appears to be heavily modified.

Totally agree.  Remember seeing the NYSW daily local here in NJ on the lines Passaic Branch after school.  Always led by a filthy, smoking RS1 with quite a decrepid caboose pulling up the rear.  Couldn't wait to see it though, running down to the tracks as soon as I changed my clothes.  Ah the memories...

I believe that the caboose actually is a former Santa Fe car that PC cut the copula down on and added Bay Windows.
