Nostalgia & History > Alcos load TWO carferries at Kewaunee, WIDate: 05/25/15 20:59 Alcos load TWO carferries at Kewaunee, WI Author: highgreengraphics Green Bay & Western Alcos on the Boat Train from Green Bay, WI switch out not one, but two carferries at the busy Kewaunee, WI harbor on a waning September 19, 1981 afternoon. The carferry on the left is Ann Arbor Railroad "Viking" from Frankfort (Elberta) MI, and the carferry on the right is Chessie System "Badger" from Ludington, MI. Since then, the state funding for all Great Lakes carferries has ended, and this scene can never be repeated. I went back to Norwood in Green Bay the following year and presented the GB&W office with a framed print of this, then I sold six more prints for a tidy profit! === === = === Photo by JLH

Date: 05/26/15 06:15 Re: Alcos load TWO carferries at Kewaunee, WI Author: highgreengraphics I was standing on top of a hill. I wanted to get farther left to get the pole out of the foreground and keep the locomotive trucks clear of the fence, but there was too much junk in the way if I moved left, but nothing there to climb on, and this view needed elevation to see over the train, this seemed like a pretty good compromise. Of course the sun and time of day was totally wrong, so I waited for the sun to dim as much as I dared to compensate, and let a lot of moves go by. I was kicking myself because I thought I had waited too long, luckily they pulled out long again at just about the critical time before the sun set. I have to say an ode to my patient wife, because she waited for me a long time that afternoon, we had just been married two years then, and still are now. === === = === JLH

And iais - I thought it might be the same one, but did not look, glad it worked out that way. I always admire your modeling work. As I have said before, I have been to that Council Bluffs facility many times, and you have very successfully captured the look and feel of the place in miniature. It's cool! === === = === JLH
