Grand Trunk Tuesday - Coming and going in Evergreen Park
Author: Englewood

Undated photos by Ken Lanovich.
Late '60's or early '70's.
A westbound GTW at 96th St in Evergreen Park.
That hand operated switch was for Ozinga Cement.

For those of you not familiar with the area, Evergreen Park is
a Chicago suburb.  These tracks are now part of the CSXT Elsdon Sub., ugh!

Does an open caboose door ruin a picture ?

Since we are in Evergreen Park.

3. Looking west down 95th St.
4. Looking east (compass south) at 99th St., 15 miles from Chicago's Dearborn St. Station.
This was our path to E.P. High School.  If we were lucky the westbound
International would show up.  Bummer, no headlight this morning.

Hey Englewood,

As far as I'm concerned, you could make every Tuesday, Grand Trunk Tuesday. :-)

the difference in fatality rate for then and now for the same activity (walking down rr tracks) is simple ... lack of situational awereness and not restricting one of the 5 natural senses (hearing) with today's electronic devices and the most important sense besides sight in that environment ... nice photos ...

And back in the day within urban areas the railroads were allowed to use a very loud warning device
known as a horn. With crossings generally one half mile apart you would know a train was coming
minutes before its arrival.  That was before quiet zones.  I was up on the tracks at 96th St. recently,
the first time in years, and I was very nervous knowing that I would have NO warning of approaching trains.

and what good are the horns if they can't be heard because of audio being blasted directly into the ear canal without any outside surrounding audio able to be heard ...

None at all.  About as good as eyes that are constantly focused on a telephone.
Or a mind that is constantly occupied by both of the above.

Somewhere along that stretch of 95th St. I believe that there was a railorad-themed cafe that featured Lionel trains that delivered your order if you were seated at the counter. I'm sure it's been at least 50 years since my family ate there, but I remember it well.

'Snackville Junction' on Western Avenue, closer to the B&OCT than the GTW.
