Nostalgia & History > CTA High-Speed CarsDate: 07/02/15 14:51 CTA High-Speed Cars Author: MartyBernard Rick Burn managed to catch all four high-speed cars at the Kimball Terminal of the Ravenswood Line in April, 1961 as these two pictures show.
NebraskaZephyr wrote about the cars on yesterday's posting.. He wrote, "... Nos. 1-4 were considered "high-speed" cars. Those four were built all-new, not using recycled components from the "Green Hornet" PCC streetcar fleet as cars 5-50 were. Among the differences was a larger diameter wheel (28" vs 26") and additional motor shunts which allowed 1-4 to top out somewhere around 70 MPH, as opposed to the 50 MPH of the average 6000 set. Those four cars originally had a distinctive red and cream paint scheme. " For more information on the cars see: http://www.chicago-l.org/trains/roster/1-50.html Enjoy, Marty Bernard CTA High Spered Car at Kimball Ave on the Ravenswood Line, Chicago, IL April 1961 Edited 1 time(s).
