Sayre, PA 1977 - ex Lehigh Valley in early Conrail Days
Author: train1275

While looking for other things I came across these all but forgotten views of the former Lehigh Valley shop area at Sayre, PA taken in the formative days of Conrail on a hot, hazy August 5, 1977.

photo #2 shows the power on the former LV lead to the line to Oswego where the LV gained access to E-L's Southern Tier to use trackage rights between Oswego and Binghamton ...

Looking at the map of Sayre, PA, it seems the Lehigh Valley occupied about half the town's land mass. At its peak, the railroad probably employed half the town's population

The former Lehigh Valley Railroad shop facility closed at the advent of Conrail.

my vague recollection is of a footbridge over the quarter mile wide yard area.  Is that still in existence?

There were engine shops, car shops, general offices, upper and lower yards, all kinds of things happening

I didm't see any footbridges from Bing maps. I think it came down around the time the shop buildings were razed.

IIRC the power is sitting on the lead to the balloon track and shops area. The Auburn Branch to Owego and beyond was the left most track in the overgrown yard track center-right - see this photo taken by Jim Gerofsky in 1975 a year before the borg took over: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=45637&nseq=45

The Railpictures site has many good pictures of LV Sayre yards and locomotive servicing area.

BTW, LV's Auburn Branch at one time did reach North Fair Haven, NY on Lake Ontario, only 14 miles from Oswego, where there was a pier for loading coal on ships. Abandonments to N Fair Haven and Fair Haven apparently occurred in 1937 and 1953, respectively.
