And on weekends in Los Angeles when many switch jobs did work they would assemble five or six to run 10,000 ton extras down to the harbor as seen here in '84 as five take a Koppel Bulk 10,000 ton loaded grain train to the port of Long Beach passing through Torrance, CA on Santa Fe's Harbor Sub.

Only two months into INRD's start up. Hard to believe that was almost 29 1/2 years ago. The tank car to the right of the photo stored liquid fertilizer if I remember correctly. Storage of cars in Senate Ave. terminal was an early income producer for INRD. One way for a regional to make some revenue in those days to keep the payroll going. Making friends and encouraging customers. Mr. Hoback did what ICG wouldn't do--that was "run a railroad".

The 2500s were pretty good little switch engines in their original cab configuration with the throttle and air brake stands straight out of the F-7s along with the rest of the controls all egromonically well located. The remodels, not so much. They mislocated the new AAR control stand in relation to the stationary seat where you had the throttle in your lap and the brake valves behind you, which was OK so long as all the work was behind you. Overall, the bell ringers were better, more horsepower. My 2 cents worth. |
