Nice old photo Frank. I'm trying to figure out what the switchman is holding. It isn't a journal hook. If it is it's been through a lot.

Just a guess, but I wonder if its to operate turnouts in the street. SP in San Francisco had a huge maze of street trackage,  at the time.

The bar was used to open submarine switch lids. Much easier to do from a standing position. It also was used to grab the lever which was usually under mud and water.

The only time I saw any switch point bars was on street cars. To much of a chance of freight cars  picking the points.
