In typical fashion train was likely yarded at SLO, power sent to the roundhouse, serviced, and then used in helper service. Even in the late 1970's and early 1980's it was common to see a westbound arrive SLO, be yarded, have the power pulled and then used as a helper when two different helper sets were needed, especially when they detoured lumber trains via the Coast.

Maybe I'm reading the registers incorrectly but it looks to me the WCP went west from SLO upon arrival. By the late '70's that was rare. Usually yarded and power to the house, then used as a helper if necessary. That's why I was, at first, thinking the 2-831 was the WCP until you pointed out 833. I wasn't around the Coast until starting in the summer of 1975 - I remember how slow it was then. It picked up some that Fall. Any idea what train 2-831 might be? Maybe just some random LA - Oakland train? Don't see a SLO departure for it, just the power used as a helper. Common, common sight in the late '70's. Can't tell you how many times I saw one westbound besides the Peddler (usually the WCOAZ or LAOAY) get yarded just to get the power off the train so it could be used as a helper for another westbound (usually for the WCOAY or the "hot block"). Just call it the LA.
2/831 is the SFLA ar 1150p on the 6th dep about 2a on the 7th. In 1972 it was the SF/I the hotblock from Indio, SFLA OA/SF traffic and GGM which was a glorified drag, terminate at WJ or SJ. Date: 08/27/15 13:04 Re: SP SLO engineer's arrivals July 7. 1972 Author: spnudge I remember many a time being called for the First LA or Second LA, (Wat.Jct to SLO or SLO to LA.) Some times they would be hot enough (left over Zipper cars) to run as 2-98 out of Wat. Jct or SLO, east.
We had Second Class 920, 922 & 924 on the west end and on the LA side Second Class 830, 832, 834 & 836 to LA. West Bound out of Burbank we had Third Class 829, 831, 833 & 835. West bound out of SLO was Extra. That is when you had to know TOs and keep track of your schedules. Not only you but other ones. For example a lot of times you would be running on the Smokie as No. 832, straight up. With enough delay you could run out of time at Ventura, Somis, etc. Your schedule was only good for 12 hours and then you didn't exist. You would have to get in the clear somewhere by then and either be patched or get some delivery orders making you an Extra or another train. Two trips stand out in my mind. One was Engineer Ray Ridgeway caught a "TV Guide" special out of SLO. It was 2 engines, 3 cars and a cab. It was issues that needed to be in LA for mailing at a certain time for mailing. His orders read, Eng. XXXX run Extra SLO to Santa Barb and has right over all trains. Extra XXXX wait at: and a list of every siding. Even the Zipper had to head in. I caught a "Special out of LA to SLO one night with Conductor Tommy Negrete. It was 4 cars and a cab The two center flat cars had a huge battle ship gun barrel that didn't make the boat from Long Beach. The Navy wanted it in Oakland the next morning. I got the same type of order as Ray had and we made time. Beat Atks and the Zippers running time all to hell. Jim, thanks for posting these. Those registers are history in itself. Nudge |
