Nostalgia & History > UP-SP Merger, OgdenDate: 08/27/15 15:09 UP-SP Merger, Ogden Author: donstrack I need some help. I am looking for the original STB decision that approved the UP-SP merger on August 6, 1996, with all the conditions. Surprisingly, it is not available at the STB.gov web site.
Specifically, I am looking for the language that allowed the merger to take place without any conditions that ended the existance of Ogden Union Railway & Depot Co. in Utah. I can only assume that with the merger of the two owning companies, OUR&D actually did go away. Or maybe not. I am updating this web page about OUR&D: http://www.utahrails.net/ogden/ogden-ourd.php I did find a reference to the STB allowing an exemption from the need to consider the public interest for five terminal and switching companies: Alton & Southern (A&S) Central California Traction Co. (CCT) Ogden Union Railway & Depot Co. (OURD) Portland Terminal Railroad (PTRR) Portland Traction Company (PTRC) Any help would be appreciated. Don Strack Edited 1 time(s). If I remember correctly the OUR&D was disbanded in about 1968 and both the UP and SP took their half of the yard and operated it as two separate yards. I inherited the maintenance of half of the old OUR&D tracks and half of the maintenance of the Depot.. Turns out, I dug out my Ogden Rails file, and I had kept several newspaper clippings that included coverage of the ICC hearings in 1965-1966. Kind of strange why I did not put such detail in the book. The information is now on the OUR&D page. http://www.utahrails.net/ogden/ogden-ourd.php On March 13, 1968, OUR&D was reorganized, affecting 1,050 workers. Union Pacific hired 550 workers to support its former-OUR&D operations, Southern Pacific hired 150 workers, and the remaining 350 stayed with OUR&D to support the passenger-train operations. (Ogden Standard Examiner, March 13, 1969, "today") In March 1969, there was a newspaper photo of an empty space where Track 8 had been removed. The caption says the track was removed because of the reduced number of trains through the depot - down to six daily trains and one, the Butte Special, running three times a week. If I am reading my October 1968 employee timetable right, those six trains would be the eastbound and westbound Trains 5/6, 9/10, and 103/104. Then, in May 1971 Amtrak took over passenger train operations. So now I need to figure out what happened to those 350 employees that were kept to support passenger trains. Then, how many employees OUR&D had at the time of the UP-SP merger in 1996. Don Strack |
