Remembering Pennsy heavyweights
Author: bandob

Back in 1960, The Pennsy still ran heavyweight cars on most Washington-New York trains. Here's view of some: P70 coaches in color, and "The Legislator" with a heavyweight parlor-buffet car behind the GG1.  Back in the days of 620 film.

OK, here's more PRR 620, and then I also started a  620 thread for all railroads.  All these circa 1959-1960 in Washington, DC.

B&OB,

Thanks for posting these shots!  In the second photo, the heavyweight Pullman parlor-restaurant-lounge is PRR #7007 Lambs Club, which was built in 1929 in Lot #6289 to Plan #3992, 1 of 7 such cars built in that Lot for the Pennsy; all cars were outshopped in December.  These cars when built had 13 parlor chairs, a buffet (kitchen), a 12 seat dinette (2 4-seat tables and 2 2-seat tables), and a 16 seat lounge.  The floor arrangement was altered several times, each time resulting in a new suffix to the original Plan: #3992B, #3992C, etc.  Between August and October 1943, these cars were changed to Plan #3992G, with 12 parlor chairs, kitchen, 24 seat dinette (6 4-seat tables), and a 14 seat lounge.  Besides the Engineers Club, which was destroyed by fire at Philadelphia's Broad Street Station in September 1943, the remaining 6 cars were sold on 12/31/1945 to PRR as #7005-#7008 and #7011-#7012.  All 6 cars were withdrawn from Pullman lease in October 1956, and 3 cars were subsequently transferred to the MofW department; the #7007 as #492061.  The car was later sold to the Midwest Railway Historical Foundation (MRHF), which began as the equipment-owning arm of the Midwest Chapter NRHS.  After splitting from the Chapter, MRHF became the Midwest Railway Preservation Society, and MRPS is based at the former B&O roundhouse/yard in Cleveland.  I recently acquired on eBay a Jay Brown slide of the Lambs Club as owned by MRHF in Cleveland on May 26th, 1991, although I don't know if the car is still extant, or if it is still owned by MRPS.

2 additional cars were built in June 1930 to Plan #3992A, and were also sold to PRR on 12/31/45 as #7009-#7010, these 2 cars were also withdrawn from lease in October 1956, with one transferred to the MofW department.  Besides the Lambs Club, there is another car from Lot #6289 which survives: #7012 Rotary Club, which was later MofW #27280, and is now located in Berea, OH, as the Berean.

Ted, thanks for that interesting information. It just shows, one never know what treasures can appear when you post old photos on Trainorders!

That's an exceptionally interesting car / class history.  Thanks for sharing
