I always thought the GG-1 looked like an orthopedic shoe but many others might disagree.

I thought you had a photo of a Santa Fe Alco PA-1 to show us , Or a SP GS-4 in Daylight Paint

just some fyi ... the PRR never referred to the electrics as locomotives ... their diesels were called locos/engines/units and the electrics were called motors ...

Just my opinion, but the mid-thirties produced the epitome of locomotive design; the PRR GG-1 and the Challenger steam engines. Both with a 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement. Everything after that was just a variation on a theme.

I showed you an E5 yesterday. Note the question mark in the subject line.

This perspective from the stairs at Hbg. station is one angle of the G's we don't usually see.  Nice shot.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say "most beautiful", but I would say "most iconic", as she is, to me, THE inage of an electric locomotive.  Given that there are so many categories and eras to choose from, it would be very difficult to crown any one locomotive "Most Beautiful".  AA

It's a little-known fact that the GG-1 inspired Raymond Loewy to design a line of orthopedic shoes . . . it must be true, you just read it on the internet!

I'm still laughing over the orthopedic shoe remark.  As in anything else, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

As one who was brought up close to the Hudson River Line when steam was king, I want to yell Niagra or Hudson, but the truth is that the most beautiful locomtive ever built may still be in service.  The 611.

IMHO..."MOST BEAUTIFUL....?"

THE CLASSIC SP DAYLIGHTS AND THE MATCHING TRAINS THEY HAULED.... INDISPUTABLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TRAINS IN THE WORLD...

YET, I'm a dyed in the wool PENNSY FAN, & I adore the big Gs --- they're beautiful at speeds over 100 per!

Well Marty, you certainly got the troops stirred up!  Whether the absolute best looking or not may be open to debate, but the GG-1 is without question a timeless classic.  Those are excellent photos, by the way.

My rail interests lean towards the Midwest and the West, but if anyone claimed a GG1 in PRR colors was the best looking locomotive ever, I wouldn't argue.

Thanks for sharing.
