Al Chione Dupe Slides: GN Passenger Cars, Part 6
Author: Rainier_Rails

After another hiatus, here's the next part in this series of posts, featuring slides #21-#24 of a total of 247 Al Chione dupes of passenger cars I've acquired on eBay.  Just to review, the first 60 slides are GN cars, then the next 80 are CB&Q, followed by 60 AT&SF, 40 PRR, 1 NP, 2 CB&Q, 1 GN, and finally, 3 NKP which I just acquired.  When I acquired the majority of these slides in sets of 20, there were no description sheets save for the last set of PRR slides.  The description sheet lists the location and date, but not the original photographer.  So, as I've asked in the previous sections, if anybody can identify who took these slides, when, or where, this would be very helpful!  Thanks in advance!

For anybody who's interested, here's a link to the previous Part 5, which in turn has links to Parts 1 to 4: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3809489

Here are the first 2 slides:

Photo #21: 44 seat chair-buffet (galley) #945.  Built in 1937 by P-S in Lot #6531 to Plan #7401 as a 58 seat chair, 1 of 12 such cars (#938-#949) built in that Lot for the Empire Builder.  W. David Randall lists that 6 cars (#944-#949) were reconfigured in 1947, with 4 seats removed to make room for a conductor's office (at the women's end) and 4 seats removed to make room for a small buffet serving station (at the men's/vestibule end).  In 1952, these 6 cars were assigned to the Gopher/Badger, and in 1963, the #944 and #945 were reconfigured a second time, with seating further reduced from 50 to 44, with 4 seats removed for a larger buffet/kitchen area, and a pair of seats removed at the women's end (half of the first row after the conductor's office).  All 12 of these 1937 chairs were transferred to the MofW department by BN, although at this time I don't know the MofW numbers.  Photographed in Saint Paul in 1963 or later.  The switcher is #153, and the partially seen #1080 was 1 of 21 P-S Plan #7485 56 seat chair-8 seat smokers acquired from C&NW between 1961 and 1965 as #1076-#1082 and #1086-#1099; NP and CB&Q also acquired several of these cars.  Specifically, the #1080 was built in 1946 in Lot #6722 as C&NW #3449.  In 1958, a number of these chair-smokers were refurbished/redecorated by C&NW and renumbered to the #8xx-series; the #3449 as #842.  This car was 1 of 4 chair-smokers acquired by GN in 1964 as #1078-#1081.  The #1080 was retired in 1971 and sold to NdeM, and was later FCP #1972.

Photo #22: 16 duplex roomette-4 double bedroom (16DXR-4DB) sleeper #1174 Many Glacier.  Built in 1947 by P-S in Lot #6751 to Plan #4108, 1 of 10 such cars (#1170-#1179) built in that Lot; cars were delivered in January and February.  #1178 and #1179 were owned by CB&Q, the rest by GN.  In 1956, the #1175 Oberlin Glacier and #1177 Harrison Glacier were reconfigured to Plan #4108B as the #1198 Manitoba Club and #1199 Winnipeg Club respectively for the Winnipeg Limited, with 2 bedrooms and 8 roomettes replaced by a 27 seat buffet lounge (Randall lists 24 seats).  3 cars were retired in the late 1960's and subsequently scrapped: #1176 Sexton Glacier in 1967, the Many Glacier in 1968, and #1199 in 1969.  The Burlington Route sold the #1178 Sperry Glacier to the Lake Shore RHS in 1969, and it was later resold to private ownership, and operated in charter service in Mexico as the #800032 General Benjamin Hill.  Similar to the 2 Winnipeg Limited rebuilds, 2 of the bedrooms and 8 of the roomettes were replaced by a dining-lounge space, and it was later renamed Chile Verde.  The #1198 was retained by BN for executive use, and in 1972 became #A25 St. Croix River.  BN sold the car in 1981 to Northern Rail Car, and it was later resold to Dan Dews and Edmund Boyce (d.b.a. St. Louis Car Co.), then resold again to John Wilson/North Star Charters, who rebuilt it to a business car as the #800289 North Star.  It was then acquired by Ohio Railway Supply as FLNX #3, painted in an Air Force One-inspired paint scheme as the Rail Force One, and is now used by FEC as the St. Augustine.  The other 5 cars were retired in 1971 and transferred to the MofW department as BN #968202-#968206.

Next 2:

Photo #23: 8 duplex roomette-4 section-4 double bedroom (8DXR-4S-4DB) sleeper #1164 Logan Pass.  Built in 1947 by P-S in Lot #6751 to Plan #4107, 1 of 10 such cars (#1160-#1169) built in that Lot; cars were delivered between December 1946 and January 1947.  #1168 Red Gap Pass and #1169 Swift Current Pass were owned by CB&Q.  The #1169 was wrecked in Saint Paul on October 5th, 1949, and was replaced by the 2nd #1169, which was built in Lot #6895 and delivered in June 1951; interestingly, Randall lists that the 2nd #1169 was ordered in August 1948 before the wreck occurred, it might have originally been intended simply as a "protection car".  When delivered, the 2nd #1169 was owned by GN, and as a result, the #1167 Cut Bank Pass was transferred to CB&Q ownership in 1950.  In contrast, with the arrival of the new dome cars in 1955, the #1168 was transferred to GN ownership.  The Burlington Route sold the #1167 to the Tennessee Valley RR Museum in 1969, and the other 9 cars were retired in 1969 and subsequently sold to NdeM (via Edwards International) and named in the Constellation/Planet-series; the Logan Pass as #596 Urano.  This is one of several slides showing GN cars in storage with small lettering applied at both ends, which reads: "This car shipped from storage in Pullman Company shops Calumet to CB&Q R.R. [illegible] N. Canal St. Chicago Illn. Not to be [illegible] in revenue service."

Photo #24: 48 seat "long distance" leg rest chair #1127, built in 1947 by P-S in Lot #6718 to Plan #7497 (rear vestibule).  Planned to be renumbered as BN #4807, which was not applied, sold in 1973 to NJDOT-CNJ and reconfigured to 108 seat commuter coach #119, later NJT #5303.  I believe that this car was one of several ex-GN cars acquired by URHS in 1987, and was then sold in 1991 to the Pacific Railroad Preservation Association (SP&S #700, PRPX).  PRPX sold the car in 2001, and it is now located behind the Amtrak depot in Chico, CA, and is used as a coffee shop.  Photographed in Denver.
