Nostalgia & History > D&H SD45 Binghamton 1968Date: 08/31/15 05:16 D&H SD45 Binghamton 1968 Author: kgmontreal During 1967 D&H purchased three SD45 units from EMD. These were the former SD45 demos and were repainted in the attractive D&H ligthning stripe scheme. After three years the D&H swapped the units to Erie-Lackawanna for three GE U33C units. EL repainted the ex-D&H SD45s into EL colors. On the eve of the formation of Conrail the swap was reversed and the D&H got the SD45s back. They then ran on the D&H in a patched EL paint scheme.
But they looked best in the D&H ligthning stripe as shown here in Binghamton in 1968. If my memory is correct the D&H SD45s had led the train from Mechanicville and EL had just added their two units on the headend for the trip west across the Southern Tier. KG Edited 1 time(s). Not many shots of the 802 in Lightening stripes and you have 2 of the 3 units in 1 shot...EL unit still has numberboards as delivered and horn has not been moved to engineers side.

One silver star for you. If you have shot of them on the point, your star will be upgraded to gold and you will receive the "Photo Master" rating... Cheers, Yukon Yeti Date: 08/31/15 18:57 Re: D&H SD45 Binghamton 1968 Author: SCKP187 Thanks for sharing the photos and story---this is really nice.
Brian Stevens Date: 08/31/15 19:42 Re: D&H SD45 Binghamton 1968 Author: DavidP The U33Cs that the D&H received in the trade with E-L stood out because they didn't get the usual D&H lighting stripe. The D&H simply changed the E-L stripe from maroon to blue.

Spectacular! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/31/15 21:13 by CPR_4000. Date: 09/01/15 07:08 Re: D&H SD45 Binghamton 1968 Author: NYSWSD70M DavidP Wrote:

All were eventually painted in the lightning strip scheme. |
