Nostalgia & History > ALCO 430-2 DemonstratorDate: 09/03/15 18:15 ALCO 430-2 Demonstrator Author: MartyBernard ALCO 430-2 Demonstrator at Richmond, VA on March 9, 1969. According to The Diesel Shop ( http://www.thedieselshop.us/ALCOdemo.HTML ) Alco C430 demonstrators 430-1, -2, -3, and -4 were built in August 1966 and were sold to SCL and numbered 1275 - 1277. Bath time!
Enjoy, Marty Bernard Date: 09/03/15 18:20 Re: ALCO 430-2 Demonstrator Author: Out_Of_Service esthetically the Alco hi-ad trucks both the 4 & 6 axles are in my opinion the best looking set of trucks on any diesel locomotive ...

Agreed!!! Date: 09/04/15 02:48 Re: ALCO 430-2 Demonstrator Author: Evan_Werkema I'm reminded of a two-pager that appeared in Trains in the April 1993 issue. The photo, taken in 1967 at Whitehall, NY on the D&H showed three C430 demonstrators and an Alco dynamometer car. The text talked about Alco's longstanding relationship with D&H (the Schenectady plant was sited along the D&H main) and the monopoly it had on their locomotive purchases...until D&H bought U30C's and didn't buy C430's. Author Alan Irwin speculates that must have been cause for sober reflection at Alco HQ regarding company's future..."If it couldn't sell to D&H, its old standby and partner, to whom could it sell?"

I believe that one of the model makers has these in SCL. Uncle Joe,Seffner,Fl. Here's the 1275 at Frisco's Tennessee Yard engine facility in Memphis.

I third this... And yes boxcar1954, the demos were sold to SCL in 1968. Alco really wasn't doing well in the south, no other sales after 1966. |
