Nostalgia & History > Two Lesser Known AT&SF Passenger Trains

Roger Puta was a passenger train buff and succeeded in riding and photographing most of those that were running in the 1960s.  Here are just two.  With slight editing, the captions are Roger's.

1. ATSF 60L (PA-1) with Train 25, the Pecos Valley Streamliner, at Clovis, NM on August 27, 1967.  Train2, the San Francisco Chief, is at the left.  Train 25 taken off 4 days later.  

2. ATSF 326L (F7A) with Train 12, The Chicagoan, at Union Station Wichita, KS on March 27, 1967.  A big dome and a cafeteria-dine are added here.

Great see these passenger train photos, especially the secondary trains. I remember Roger's Winterail programs that were outstanding .

No.25-26 were known as the Cavern.  By this date, 25-26 usually had either the M-160 or M-190 for power and a coach ob, so the PA power train would have been usual. the train came off on 8/28/67

That PA, No. 60-L, became Delaware & Hudson 17 and is preserved today in Mexico!

So, I'm guessing "the Cavern" operated all the way to Carlsbad, Did it also go down to Pecos?

ATSF 25 & 26 ran from Carlsbad to Clovis and return. Pecos was served by a mixed train.

When did they remove the line to Pecos? Worked in the oil field around Orla and seen the old grade and the bridges, stayed in Carlsbad.

I've heard that M.160 and M.190 were none-too-reliable in their final years, and it's actually pretty unusual to see a photo from 1967 showing one of the doodlebugs on 25/26.  Most photos show a PA substituting:

There are also reports that an E8m was used for a time.

The line into Pecos was abandoned in September 1990 according to McMillan's Tumbleweeds and Fast Freights.
