Nostalgia & History > An RF&P Freight

RF&P 136 (GP35), 123 (GP40), 135 (GP35), and an E8A in October 1971.  Can anybody tell me where Roger Puta took this?  Even the nearest town.  I assume it's a southbound in the afternoon.

The concrete highway underpass looks like either Newington (north of the current Auto Train Station at Lorton), or else the old Rt. 608 underpass in south Fredericksburg, just north of the current southern terminus of Virginia Railway Express commuter service, but it's difficult to know in these old photos due to the incredible build-up of apartments and other infrastructure in that region since this photo was taken during 1971.

Is this the bridge you mean at Lorton?

It's not Newington, there is no US Army Railroad interchange in the photo.

That might be the most scenic RF&P photo I've ever seen. Probably all treed-in these days.

I will second that!  What a classy looking consist and it is definitely a show-stopping photo.  Already one of my favorite photos of this year!  Thanks for showing us this classic.

Can't place the location but it should be a north/east bound.  On the RF&P, even numbers engines faced north/east and odd numbered south/west.

I would wager that this is Naomi Rd in Fredericksburg. The view should be looking southwest.

According to a bud in Richmond - 

"I believe it is East View Curve, better known as Brooke, MP 64 or so. If I'm right, the Brooke VRE station would be behind the engines in this shot..."

Of course VRE did not exist.

Can we have a positive ID so I can caption Roger's slide for permanent posting?

I am also sure this is just north of Fredericksburg based on the building in the background. Those trees seen just before the buildings would be the Rappahannock River.

Look at picture 3 of 3 for the side of the "bridge" that I believe matches your slide. You can even see the power line entering the left portal.

Marty, RF&P 136 is still with us today. The paint looks a little rough, but it's still RF&P Blue and Gray. It's down on the Hartwell RR in Lavonia Ga.  This shot was taken May 17 2015  Ben
