Appears the 4460 is taking on water in your 3rd photo, yet she is stopped next to the water plug. Was it out of service?

A photo of this train was published in an old issue of Pacific News, showing the train stopped at Merced. Did it take on water there too?

4460 is stopped beyond the water plug.  Note that there is no shadow from the tender on the plug.

Interestingly, the water plug is painted silver, just like the water plugs that were at the SP Bakersfield locomotive servicing area.

What catches my eye are those very modern looking towers in #1.  Were they just crossing tender's towers, or did they have some other function?
