Dead bodies along the NEC
Author: march_hare

No, not railfans or trespassers, but evidently the people who built the line, immigrants not always treated well by the local inhabitants of the day.

Can't seem to make that link clickable, so copy and paste will have to do.

A reminder, perhaps, that almost all of us are immigrants, or descended from them.

This is on the Harrisburg Line.  The Philadelphia Chapter of the PRRT&HS was involved in dedicating a state historical marker to these laborers a few years ago.  The memorial area is visible just west of Malvern on the north side of the tracks.  Need to look hard or you'll miss it as the train goes by.  The only people who helped these poor fellows were a group of nuns who walked from miles away to give aid.  Residents deliberately closed their doors as the nuns walked by.

PBS has a presentation about this, perhaps it can be veiwed on their website. Interesting in that before the show was aired there was a number of discussions about the graves, the cut and the line on TrainOrders. Might be interesting to go back and check out the info on TO.

Yes, and someone needs to PAY for this atrocity.

Yep. Especially someone completely unrelated to any of the historical happenings, but ideally with lots of money.

Its even better if they can pay TO someone that is also completely unrelated to the happenings, other than happening to have a law office in the same state.

The D&H canal extension from Hawley to Lackawaxen PA saw several burial pits for Irish diggers in the 1820s.  Typhoid was a major killer, as was dysentery.

Dig a pit, bury them, and hire another 200 unlucky folks to continue the dig.  Nasty and brutish work.

Nobody bothered to keep records, but there are several memorials to the fallen workers

People have to ask how unions came to be? Life was cheap to the capitalists who built this nation.

I sense a dig at capitalism here.

I hate to break it to you, but life was cheap well before capitalism was born.  In fact, life is cheap now all around the world - and in some segments of our own US population.   There are only precious few places on the globe where life is valued in any fashion similiar to what we see as value.   It was capitalism that enabled our society to lead the world in innovation that led to such advances in medical care that allow us to value life so highly and form laws, unions etc to protect our lives.
To be clear, capitalism is what has allowed us to live the standard of life that we currently enjoy.   Thank you capitalism.

Also in the USSR, where capitalism wasn't a favored economic scheme.  Or to the child soldiers of ISIS, Al-Shabab, etc. Lots of contemproary examples.

Does the "i' in iPhone stand for irony?
