   Track removal due to deteriorating business in the east is always interesting to me. They seem to all do the least amount of removal and then the rails set there rusting for decades with no further cleanup. Sure tells a story however.

I don't know when these photos were taken and I cannot speak for that location, but there are many other places in the Northeast (ex-Penn Central and ex-Conrail territory) where much of the excess track has been removed.  This is particularly true in Central and Western Pennsylvania.
